Hello From Braiding Futures
I founded Braiding Futures in May, 2026. I'd like to introduce myself, my perspective, and lay some of the intellectual groundwork for blog posts + offerings to come.
About Me
My name is Christopher Bisignani. I'm a Software Engineer, Ontologist, and AI Researcher. I worked in applying AI to Knowledge Representation at Google, founded an AI research lab, and now I'm working on Braiding Futures, a Public-Benefit Software Studio.
What I Want for the World
My primary moral lens is liberatory value ethics. I orient towards actions and values which promote liberation for all beings. It would take a while to explain exactly what this means on a theoretical/intellectual level, so I want to offer a picture instead.
I love music and dance, art, food, and culture. I love poetry and philosophy. I love love. I see these practices (and others) as being fundamentally liberatory.
I also love organization, order, safety, and protection. I see these practices as also playing a part in what it means to be liberated.
I see liberation as a braid of loving-kindness and appropriate boundaries. Boundaries create the structure in which loving-kindness can play. Loving-kindness creates the light which gives boundaries meaning.
How I Do and Do Not Want AI to Interact With the World
AI is incredibly powerful, and has massively increased the cognitive surplus of the world.
There is an extent to which we are in control of AI, and an extent to which we are not in control of AI.
As long as, and to the extent that, we are in control of AI, we should orient it towards enhancing our ability to create appropriate boundaries and to fill the world with loving-kindness.
To the extent that AI is used to create inappropriate boundaries (either through surveillance, automation of "punishments," or increase of the power of the State beyond a healthy limit), that feels, to me, like a step away from liberation.
To the extent that AI is replacing human activity in the realms of loving-kindness: creating art, music, poetry, etc., that feels to me like a step away from liberation.
I don't want AI to be the police, and I don't want it to write poetry for me. I want it to do my taxes and to enhance my ability to write poetry. I want a 4-day work week. I want vulnerable humans and creatures to be uplifted. I want to heal the natural world and improve our collective and individual relationships to it.
This is the future I am working towards. I don't clearly see how AI plays a part, yet, but I hope you'll join me, or allow me to join you.
